Restoring Old Memories By Digitizing Photos

by Therese Short

Film captures memories we hold dear for life. However, analog photographs tend to wear off over time. This makes digitizing photos important to preserve those precious moments.

Realistically, preserving old snapshots can be tedious. It could also depend on the number of pictures one would like to preserve. This process concerns a lot of time scanning.

It may be a good idea to research on the right hardware that can process analog photographs. Select the ones with high quality and performance. There are two types. The flatbed and the film scanners.

Usually flatbed types are for general usage. One can scan text documents and photographs with this. The film scanner on the other hand, is built to process film negatives and slides. One can choose which they can use, depending on their need.

After deciding on which scanner to use, check your images first. There may be some left over dirt and speckles. These can be wiped off using a lint-free photo wipe. Always keep images dust-free to get quality copies.

Make sure to choose the right resolution suited. Others use the lowest at three hundred DPI, while others use six hundred. Some users prefer a higher pixel quantity. Although higher resolution means slower scanning speed, the quantity is well worth the wait.

Scanning is the next step. The only important thing to do at this point is making sure the alignment is right. High-tech scanners have now preview features that let users view how aligned the photograph is. They can align the copies until it's perfectly adjusted.

The best software technology has to offer today is Adobe Photoshop. This gives the user the ability to save his precious moments on film by correcting any red eyes, and removing dust and speckles from them. This is the power of digitizing photos.
